Student Council Report
The Student Council sponsored a Can Drive beginning with a “Scary Movie” night on Sat. 10/29 at 8PM in the HS Auditorium and ending with “Trick-or-Treating” for cans or any non-perishable food items on Halloween, Oct. 31st. These items will be used in Thanksgiving Food Boxes. Surplus food items will be donated to the Baptist Food Pantry here in Hooker. This includes money donations from Awesome Nails, The Hooker Advance, Hooker Grill, FNB, Hooker Equity, Hitch Feeders I, Inc. and Wiebe Farms, Inc. Money donations will be used to buy Meat certificates to be included in the Thanksgiving Boxes. As winning classes, the Seniors and Freshmen will get a pizza lunch sometime before Christmas Break. The following HHS Student Council members attended the 71st OASC State Convention in Skiatook, Oklahoma on November 5th – 7th: Elizabeth Hoffman, Alexis Wiebe, Allison Alvarado, Jayme Walton, Hailey Witt and Jordan McFarland along with their advisor Eileen Honeman. Almost 2000 students from across the state met to develop their “Imaginative”. The Native American theme was appropriate as Skiatook is located on the Osage Reservation and native dancers opened two of the sessions. Motivational speakers Ted Wiese, Bill Cordes, Judson Laipply, and Mark Scharenbroich entertained the students while giving them information and skills to help in their development as leaders. Instead of ice breakers, this year Brian Jackson led the students in Breaking World Records – such as the largest duck-duck-goose game and the most people standing on one leg. Our students were looking forward to participating in a service learning activity at the Tulsa zoo, unfortunately not enough children showed up for everyone to get to participate. Luckily one of the speakers had just spoke on what to do when you have no control of a situation, it was like we were practicing what he had just told us. Jordan did get to ride a camel though. Tulsa Teen Volunteer Revolution members encouraged the students to get involved in volunteerism as part of their day to day living, not just in reaction to some tragic event. This year the dance was a hoedown held at an arena, lots of boots! – But not much county dancing. This year’s delegates had a unique experience – an earthquake! They said it was kind of scary. Allison especially enjoyed the Convention because she had never been to one. Allison, Elizabeth, and Jordan all got to reconnect with Student Council members that they had been to Basic with this past summer. It was a tiring but dynamic weekend well worth the time.
